History, Philosophy, and Values

The History, Philosophy, and Values competency area involves knowledge, skills, and attitudes that connect the history, philosophy, and values of the profession to one’s current professional practice. This competency area embodies the foundations of the profession from which current and future research and practice will grow. The commitment to demonstrating this competency area ensures that our present and future practices are informed by an understanding of our history, philosophy, and values.

History

One competency that is extremely important to me is History, Philosophy, and Values competency. I am a firm believer that in order to change the future, you need to look at the past, the same can for for student affairs and higher education. My fellowship at Merrimack college has allowed me to not only understand the history of the institution but also that of the Association of Student Conduct Administrators (ASCA). I recently became a member of the organization in October and ever since I have done everything I can to attend further conferences and get involved.

After my first conference ASCA conference at Merrimack College, it was clear that I wanted to learn more about the organization that supports all higher education professionals of best practices of student conduct administration and conflict resolution. During my time as the Presidential Intern for the organization, I had a chance to meet and interact with the leaders of not only the association but also the student conduct field as a whole. I also learned about the brief but yet intricate history of the Association and current goals the members are trying to fulfill. It was a remarkable experience hearing from the board members as well as other professional who support student conduct on the current trends and issues that we as conduct professionals will be facing down the road.

My experience as the Presidential Intern has enabled me to have a good grasp on the history of the organization while incorporating current best practices in student conduct. The knowledge that I have gained will help me professionally in regards to adopting best practices at the institution that I am working for as well as educating other who are looking at student conduct as a professional. I consider myself to be at the basic level as of now, but am confident that I will move into the intermediate level as I continue my career.

The artifact that I chose is from the ASCA website. The link outlines the history of the organization starting from 1986 when it was originally called the Association for Student Judicial Affairs (ASJA) through today. This page is important to me because it was a great motivator for me to become more involved throughout the organization.
